HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) – The Homewood Police Department has a new crime-fighting tool that will give law enforcement the ability to have more “eyes in the skies” and combat crime. The FLIR Watch Tower is equipped with three fixed cameras and a thermal camera that has tilt, pan, and zoom capability.
The Watch Tower allows real-time video, that can be streamed back to police headquarters. The tower raises to thirty feet which will give officers a “bird’s eye view” of the area.
Homewood Police say decals will be installed and residents and commuters can expect to see the tower out in the city’s shopping districts very soon.
City leaders say it will also be used for special events.
The watchtower is the latest model offered by FLIR and is the first of it’s kind to be delivered to a law enforcement agency in Alabama.
