Dollar stores facing growing scrutiny

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Big chain dollar stores are popping up all over small-town America — but not everyone is happy about it.

In recent months, the Birmingham City Council called for a moratorium on dollar stores in the city, saying those kinds of stores contribute to the food desert problem and discourage supermarkets from opening — limiting access to produce and fresh, healthy food.

Dollar General and Dollar Tree argue they help communities by offering shoppers convenient places to get items at low prices.

However, lawmakers around the country are pushing back and cities across the country are exploring plans to restrict dollar stores.
