BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A unique basketball league is coming to Birmingham for the first time this weekend. The BIG3, founded three years ago by hip hop legend Ice Cube, will play three games at the BJCC.
The league features half-court, three-on-three competition and even four-point shots. Games take place in different cities each week, and Birmingham is one of 18 host cities this year. The BJCC will host three games Saturday, starting at 4 p.m.
“It just demonstrates that Birmingham is known across the southeast but also across the country as a sports destination city,” Birmingham city councilor William Parker said. “And so the BIG3 on 3 with Ice Cube is just another demonstration of the fact that Birmingham is working on its branding to make sure that everyone wants to come to Birmingham to bring all their sporting opportunities here.”
The league features players with championship rings and coaches with Hall of Fame credentials. Many players have years of NBA experience, including Jamario Moon, a Goodwater native who played for four teams over the course of five seasons in the NBA.
“Once Ice Cube came and they put the league out, the very first year, I was like, ‘Man, I want to be a part of that,'” Moon said. “So you know, from the first season, even though I didn’t get drafted the first season, I was still at the combine participating and everything. And I love it.”
Moon has played overseas and as a part of the Harlem Globetrotters during his basketball career. He’s glad to have a chance to play so close to home where friends and family can attend.
“For the people of Goodwater, Alexander City, Sylacauga, Childersburg, Talladega, the surrounding area there, for them to be able to come out and support and still see the guys that they grew up watching, I mean it’s always great to be able to present the opportunity to them,” he said.
Moon is off to a great start in his second BIG3 season. Playing with the Ghost Ballers, he’s in the league’s top-six in three offensive categories. The team is 2-0. They play in the final game of the night Saturday.
