I-59/20 Bridge Replacement Project Update; more closures & delays expected

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for interstate improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays as more closures are set to take place.

Listed below are City streets that will be open/closed beginning Monday, June 24th beneath the CBD bridges:

Open

  • 16th Street N
  • 19th Street N
  • 22nd Street N
  • 24th Street N

Closed

  • 15th Street N
  • 18th Street N
  • Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd – between 9th Avenue and Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd.
  • 23rd Street N
  • 25th Street N

Detour signs will be in place where necessary. Please keep in mind that all construction plans can change due to weather and other factors. And as always, use caution and obey the posted speed limits.

This work is a part of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project.

ALDOT says drivers are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.
