One Class at a Time: Corner Middle School

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A teacher from Corner Middle School received a big surprise this week! On Wednesday, Mrs. Christy Griffin was surprised with a $1,000 One Class at a Time grant check. Griffin has taught at Corner Middle School for about seven years, but her classroom desks have been around much longer.

“If you can believe it, our desks are from the 1970s,” Griffin said. The age of her classroom seating is what inspired her to apply for the One Class at a Time grant. Griffin wants to convert her traditional classroom into an “outside the desk” classroom. That means that she will replace all of her desks with creative seating options.

“My students are always getting up and moving around and not sitting down. These old desks break often and are distracting. If my kids can get up and move around more, they will be able to better concentrate,” Griffin said.

She is prepared to spend every penny of the grant money. In fact, she has a spreadsheet written out with the various Ikea furniture she plans to order.

“They can either sit on the floor, or they can sit at high-top tables, or sit in mini desks on the bottom that are really low to the floor, or bean bags. The options are endless,” said Griffin.
