MONTEVALLO, Ala. (WIAT) — There is about a month left before school starts back. Why not give your family some early education at The American Village?

The village is only a short drive from Birmingham. Melanie Poole, the communications director for The American Village, says that her favorite part of her job is seeing children’s “faces light up. They don’t realize they’re learning about American history. But they’re just having fun. They get to march with Washington’s Continental Army. They get to hear Patrick Henry. They learn how to bow and curtsey and learn a little dance. It’s just so much fun to watch those lightbulb moments.”

The American Village is known for bringing history to life! The moment you walk onto the property, you are transported back in time.

Poole says that she has a soft spot in her heart for the National Veterans Shrine.

“We remember, we thank, we honor our nation’s veterans; those men and women in every generation who served and sacrificed for us and for our liberty,” Poole said. The American Village never charges veterans or active military.

“This summer we have a very special stay-cation. Families up to five- it’s just $5 per person. Make that 30 minute trip from Birmingham. Pack up the family. Bring a picnic lunch. We can’t wait to see you,” Poole said.

If you have not experienced The American Village for yourself, it is a must-do for your summer checklist.3727 Highway 119Montevallo, AL 54115Open Monday- Friday10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
