BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Wednesday, July 17th is National Hot Dog Day.

Pilot Flying J Travel Centers are offering a free hot dog to celebrate.

All you have is download or open their Pilot Flying J app. You’ll find an offer for one free roller grill item. First-time app users will also receive a free drink of choice.

Some fun facts about the summertime staple, according to NationDayCalendar.com:

  • Over 25 million hot dogs are sold at baseball stadiums every year.
  • 7-Eleven sells the most grilled hot dogs in North America – 100 million annually.
  • On May 31, 2012, a world record was set for the most expensive hot dog. The “California Capitol City Dawg” sold for $145.49 at Capitol Dawg in Sacramento, California.
  • The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council created National Hot Dog Day.  The day was established in 1991 to coincide with a hot dog lunch on Capitol Hill every year on a Wednesday in July.

The big question: are hot dogs sandwiches or not?
