BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A local organization is in need of donated school supplies for a book bag give away Saturday, July 13.

T.C. Counseling and Consulting Services is organizing the first annual Back to School Book Bag Giveaway at the Patton Park Shield Center in Birmingham.

The organization will donate 400 book bags to Birmingham City Schools students. Tammy Cauthen is the CEO of T.C. Counseling and Consulting Services and a former school counselor.

“I was a school counselor for twelve years and noticed students did not have basic supplies when they would come in to register,” said Cauthen. “So we’re going to give them basic supplies. We’re going to give them pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, and other things they may need just to get them started for the school year.”

Cauthen says having basic school supplies is essential to students success.

“A lot of students, when they come in, they don’t realize that if you don’t have the basic supplies, it’s hard to focus in school,” said Cauthen. “So this will allow students to have at least those basic needs met when they first start school to give parents a chance to get other items they may need.”

The event will take place at Patton Park Shields Center located at 3969 14th Avenue North in Birmingham, rain or shine. The event will take place from noon until 4 p.m.

Parents and their children must attend the event together and register. The students receiving a book bag must attend the entire event.

There will be food, games and more. Vendors will be present for parents to get information about mentoring services in Birmingham.

If you would like to donate contact T.C. Counseling and Consulting Services at 205-601-6195 or through their website.
