BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The closing ceremony of the World Games 2022 will feature an all-star lineup of performers from Alabama.

Lionel Richie, a Tuskegee native and former member of The Commodores, is one of several Alabama artists slated to perform in Birmingham July 17. Richie has sold over 120 million albums as both a member of the Commodores and as a solo artist.

Other artists set to perform during the closing ceremonies will be Eufaula’s Martha Reeves of Martha and the Vandellas, country band Alabama, Hoover’s Taylor Hicks, Mobile rapper Yung Bleu, and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

“This is an amazing day for us,” said Henry Panion, artistic director for the World Games. “First of all, to have the World Games in our state and our city, but most importantly, to be able to create a celebration like this that one might would expect to see at an Olympic ceremony or a Super Bowl halftime, and so it’s large in many ways.”

The closing ceremony will be presented by Coca-Coca UNITED.
