BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Jayla Kirkland started running track back in the seventh grade. The 17-year-old is now going into her senior year at Woodlawn High School and is ranked number two in the nation for her speed in the 200-meter dash. Kirkland won the dash at the New Balance Nationals on Sunday in North Carolina.
Her time not only pushed her into the number two national spot, but it also qualified her to try out for the 2016 Olympic trials later this summer in Oregon.
Before Jayla can think of Oregon, she must first think about California. She leaves Thursday for the World Junior Trials and will be competing against high school and college students.
If she makes the U.S. team there, she will fly to Poland next month to run in the World Junior Championship.
