BIRMINGHAM – Redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyler Johnston III has been named Conference USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for leading UAB to a 31-20 road victory at Akron on Saturday.
Johnston III completed 15-of-24 for 319 yards and tied his career high with four touchdown passes. Johnston’s accuracy was on full display as three of his four touchdowns were 40 yards or longer, including a career best 78-yard strike to Myron Mitchell.
Johnston’s final touchdown pass to Mitchell capped 31 unanswered points from the Blazers. In all, Johnston III found eight different receivers against the Zips.
The Spanish Fort native is now 6-1 as a starter and has thrown for over 300 yards in three of his seven career starts.
For the season, Johnston III has 433 passing yards and five touchdowns, to go along with 88 rushing yards and an additional score.
The Blazers (2-0) are off this coming weekend before returning to Legion Field on Sept. 21 to host South Alabama. The game kicks at 2:30 p.m. on NFL Network.
