BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT)-- After taking over sole possession of first place in the C-USA West Division with a victory over Louisiana Tech last weekend, the UAB football team is looking to make school history.
If the Blazers get a win at Rice on Saturday it will tie the record (2004) for best start in school history at 5-1.
The 28-7 victory over Louisiana Tech was the first ever in Ruston, La. and gave the Blazers back-to-back wins over Louisiana Tech for the first time in school history. The 21-point margin of victory was the Blazers’ largest in a road game since winning 45-24 at Southern Miss on Nov. 29, 2014.
UAB started the season with a convincing 52-0 win over Savannah State in week 1.
Momentum slowed down after a blowout loss on the road to Coastal Carolina in week 2, but the Blazers have since won three straight games by an average of 29-12.
“All we have to do is back-track to Coastal," head coach Bill Clark said. "Not taking anything away from them, but it is week-to-week, staying humble, working hard. That’s a reminder. We can go back to Charlotte. Whatever that is, they’re fighting for their lives. It’s important to them. They’re at home and playing in front of their families. For us, how important is this game? It’s the championship game. It’s a conference game. We should have some confidence, but not cockiness. We’ll see if we practice like we did last week. That’s going to be a challenge. Literally, we’re living in this moment.”
Kickoff with Rice is slated for 12pm Saturday on ESPN+.
