Alabama, Auburn combine for 21 spots on ESPN’s ‘150 Greatest College Football Teams’

(WIAT) — College football is celebrating 150 years this season. So, ESPN has been releasing lists of the 150 greatest of a certain topic. And you can’t have a list of greats without Auburn and Alabama.

In the most recent list, ESPN looked at the 150 best college football teams over the past 150 seasons. The Crimson Tide and Tigers combined for 21 total entries.

Alabama finished with 18 entries on the list with their highest ranking at No. 8 with the 1979 team that went 12-0 and won the national championship. The Crimson Tide also had entires at:

  • No. 10- 2009 team
  • No. 21- 1992 team
  • No. 38- 1966 team
  • No. 42- 2015 team
  • No. 45- 1961 team
  • No. 51- 2011 team
  • No. 65- 2016 team
  • No. 68- 1978 team
  • No. 75- 2012 team
  • No. 87- 2018 team
  • No. 91- 1930 team
  • No. 93- 1977 team
  • No. 98- 1945 team
  • No. 114- 1925 team
  • No. 123- 1934 team
  • No. 129- 1973 team
  • No. 143- 1964 team

Auburn had a total of 3 entries on the list. Their national championship-winning 2010 team was ranked as their highest at No. 41. The Tigers also had entries at:

  • No. 54- 2004 team
  • No. 95- 1957 team

The 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers finished with the number one overall spot after holding 10 of their 13 opponents to under 7 points.
