Woman shot, killed on Avenue J in Ensley

News

The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide that happened on Avenue J in Ensley. Police say around 5:45 p.m. a man forced his way into a woman’s apartment and shot her once in the torso, killing her. The victim is believed to be in her 50s. Police do not believe this was a random act.

They say the suspect then attempted to steal a car at a nearby Dollar General on Avenue H but was unsuccessful. Then he did steal a car from a woman at a gas station across the street.

“The heinousness of this crime really speaks to how careless and reckless this individual is,” said Sgt. Bryan Shelton with the Birmingham Police Department. “It’s unfortunate that a woman had to lose her life and now a family has to grieve and start the process of rebuilding over again. As police officers and as investigators, our primary focus is bringing this reckless individual to justice.”

Police canvassed the neighborhood for information from witnesses. They are still searching for a suspect. No one is in custody.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Birmingham Police Department or call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
