Woman safe after being held at gunpoint on 5th Ave S, boyfriend taken into custody

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (9 a.m.): The man has been taken into custody. Charges are pending.

UPDATE (8:30 a.m.): The woman has come out of the house and is safe. The man remains inside the house.

Lieutenant Edwards reports that police were on the phone with the people inside the home for about an hour and were able to convince the man to let her outside.

Police will not go into the home unless the woman presses charges.

ORIGINAL: Police are on the scene of a possible hostage situation. Birmingham Police say a man is holding a woman at gunpoint on 5th Avenue South.

The woman’s mother called police saying her daughter’s boyfriend was not letting her leave and had a gun in the home.

Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School will be closed due to this situation. Students will be taken to Woodlawn High School to be picked up by parents. All employees will report to the Lincoln Center.
