BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The wife of a man burned during an apartment fire Monday night talked exclusively with WIAT 42 News on Tuesday.

Gloria Bowden says her husband, Wayne, has burns to his head and face. He jumped from a second floor window Monday night when fire broke out in their apartment building. He was taken to the UAB burn unit for treatment but was released late Monday night.

Gloria stopped by the apartment complex to check out the damage. She and her family are staying in a new apartment. All that’s left of their apartment is a work out machine.

“That was my son’s work out bench right there,” said Gloria. The rest, including clothes and family photos, burned in the fire. 16 units total are destroyed. Up to 60 people are staying elsewhere. When Gloria first heard her apartment was on fire, she worried about her husband.

“I came outside and looked, and I could see the smoke, and I thought ‘oh my god’,” shared Gloria. She said when she got to the scene, she tried to call Wayne. He jumped from a second story window wearing just his pajamas. He left his phone inside the now-burned out apartment.

“It’s like you have to start life all over again,” said Gloria.

“At least we’re going to have each other doing it.”
