WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A community vigil was held Monday night at the Walker County Courthouse to show support for a 14-year-old boy in the hospital after being hit by a Walker County deputy’s patrol vehicle Friday evening.

“Austin didn’t deserve this, nobody does and he’ll be missed,” classmate Haylee Martinez said.

On Aug. 2, Alabama State Troopers responded to a two-vehicle traffic accident in the Jasper City limits. According to a police report, the accident happened at 10:51 p.m. at the intersection of Old Tuscaloosa Road and AL Hwy. 69 South in Jasper. The accident involved a deputy with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and an ATV driven by the boy.

The boy was seriously injured and transported from the scene to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham while the deputy was transported to Walker Baptist Medical Center.

At this time, nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.
