Van Smith wins special election for House District 42

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — Van Smith (R) has won the special election and will be the representative-elect of House District 42.

Smith, 66, was the Autauga County Commissioner who was appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey in 2014.

The seat became open following the death of Rep. Jimmy Martin (R-Clanton).

A breakdown of the votes released by ALGOP shows Smith garnered 56.85% of the votes. Jimmie Hardee finished in second with just 17.43% of the votes.

While the election results are not official yet, ALGOP has declared Smith the winner.

The special general election that will feature Smith will take place Nov. 5.
