Two injured after small plane crashes and hits car on interstate

BOWIE, MD. – (WIAT & CBS) We are following breaking news of a small plane crashing on a major interstate and hitting a car in Bowie, Maryland.

According to Maryland Officials it happened on Route 50 near Freeway Airport in Bowie around 11:20 a.m.

Two people are injured according to authorities.

Investigators say the plane’s operator was trying to land and misjudged the landing.

Officials say four people were involved in the crash. Two people who were in the car were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

According to Prince George’s County officials, two passengers from the plane refused transportation. 

Officials say the airplane involved in the crash is a Mooney 201 a four-seat, single-engine airplane known for its speed. 

Investigators say it is not clear if this was a mechanical issue, but pilots are trained to fly straight ahead if they have an engine failure on takeoff.

NTSB will take over the investigation.
