SELMA, Ala. (WIAT) – Attorney Hank Sanders held a press conference at his law office Tuesday regarding the unlawful arrest of his wife and law partner, Faya Toure. Attorney Faya Toure was unlawfully arrested and charged with “Shoplifting Campaign Signs” back on July 11, 2018, nearly one year ago.

According to Attorney Hanks, the so-called “shoplifting” involved removing campaign signs from public rights of way. This unlawful arrest and unlawful charge took place despite the fact that Selma has an ordinance prohibiting campaign signs on public rights of way.

Sanders says that nearly one year has passed without a trial. He also says, Toure has been unable to obtain any materials such as videos or other evidence. In addition, Sanders says, an unsigned document was submitted to the Alabama State Bar in an effort to take away Toure’s law license to prevent her from practicing law.

Tuesday, Toure filed a lawsuit against Selma Police Chief Spencer Collier, the City of Selma, Selma Police Officer Devon McGuire and others. According to the lawsuit, Toure alleges false arrest, false imprisonment, assault, battery, negligence, abuse of the legal process, defamation and other causes of action.
