ARLINGTON, VA. (CBS) Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan welcomed Defense Minister João Titternigton Gomes Cravinho of Portugal to the Pentagon Friday in Arlington, Virginia.
But before the welcome ceremony, Shanahan spoke on heightened international tensions in the Middle East. President Donald Trump is blaming Iran for two attacks on two oil tankers at the entrance to the Persian Gulf.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the unprovoked attacks against a Japanese vessel and a Norwegian vessel are a “blatant assault on the freedom of navigation.” Shanahan says they are still working on releasing parts of the investigation into how the attacks were orchestrated.
Iran has denied any involvement.
The Strait of Hormuz is a gateway for almost a third of all crude oil and other petroleum products carried by tanker.
