University of Alabama Fishing Team victims of theft

NORTHPORT, Ala. (WIAT) — Northport police investigators are trying to find out who stole $8,000  worth of fishing equipment from the University of Alabama’s fishing team. The theft happened several weeks ago at a Northport storage lot where the fishing team keeps their boat locked up.

The thieves stole all the team’s fishing rods and reels and tackle equipment. That is where they left the boat after a Thanksgiving tournament, only to later find the boats had been broken into.

Jordan Leah, team member of the UA fishing team said, “So they stole about thirty rods and reels and all of our tackle.  It’s more than just the monetary value because some of the rods my uncle actually made for me. So I can’t get those back even with all the donations people have been giving. Some of the tackle was my dad’s and his dad’s before his so it’s really tough.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up and many people and some companies have offered to donate money and new equipment.

The team’s next tournament is two weeks from now, at a lake in North Alabama.
