BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — November is lung cancer awareness month and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is working to raise awareness about the disease.
Thursday the center hosted an educational program event at teh JCCEO Headquarters in Birmingham. The center, along with the Lung Cancer Alliance, are working with a $1.6 million grant to reach underserved Alabamians who are most at risk for lung cancer.
“This project serves seven counties. We’re able to work here in urban Birmingham, metro Jefferson County, as well as six black belt counties. So from Marengo, Choctaw, Sumter, Hale, Dallas, and Greene County, UAB will have a presence in these communities and we’ll have staff and community health advisors,” Program director Claudia Hardy said.
Hardy also tells us they will be doing a series of educational programs in those communities over the next three years.
