Two houses destroyed by fire on 2nd Avenue South

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Two homes are destroyed after an early-morning fire, including one that displaced a man and his 14-year-old son.

The fire started around 4 a.m. in an abandoned home on 2nd Ave. N. The fire spread to the home next door, where Kenneth Richardson and his son were sleeping.

“My son came and woke me up. He said he heard glass breaking next door,” Richardson said. “And we looked out the window, the house was on fire. And I want to commend my son. If it weren’t  for my son, I probably would have been still in the house right now. I’m a deep sleeper.”

Richardson and his son got out of the home safely, and no one else was injured. But their home is destroyed.

“Someone told me Red Cross was on the way,” Richardson said. “I’ve lost totally everything. Me and my son, we’ve lost everything. We just have what we have on right here, and that’s it.”
