BROOKWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — Police in Tuscaloosa County are searching for two car thieves who stole a car from a Brookwood gas station.  The crime was caught on video surveillance video, it happened July 4th at Mary’s Travel Center.

Investigators say the victim, Christy Marcee, made a quick stop to run into the gas station on her way home after visiting her husband James at the hospital in Tuscaloosa. Earlier in the day, he suffered a heart attack, the family was planning to visit family that night in Cullman for the holiday.  When Marcee walked back outside her silver 2013 Chevy Malibu was gone.

Trey Spiller says he feels bad for the Marcee family. Spiller often buys gas at Mary’s travel plaza.

“It’s a shame the world we live in you can’t leave your can and run inside to the gas station in an emergency without somebody taking it and I feel sorry for them and the situation that they are in,” Spiller said.

Ashley Sanders is also a customer at the gas station and heard about the crime. She too is hoping police will catch those responsible.

“It’s terrible, she already has enough stuff going on and then she has to come out and her car gets stolen. I hate that for her and I am praying for her and her family. I hope she gets her car back and I hope her husband feels better. The car thieves should be prosecuted.”

Police officers say a male suspect got in the car and drove off, and another suspect left the scene in the getaway car. Trey Spiller said he is keeping the Marcee family in prayer.

“Everybody here in the community, our thoughts and prayers are with you guys.  I just can’t believe someone would do this, it’s as low as you can get.”

No arrests have been made, Brookwood police are asking anyone with information to call law enforcement.
