Train derails in Irondale

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night, a train derailed off the tracks on 1st Avenue and 20th Street in Irondale.

Irondale Police Detective Michael Mangina says there are ten or twelve tanker cars derailed at the scene near City Hall. Mangina also says that one car was leaking diesel fuel. Due to the leak, police have blocked off roads for a four block radius. No evacuations are taking place, but police are asking people living in the area to stay in their homes.

Hazmat crews are on the scene to clean up. A cause of the derailment has yet to be determined.
