Traffic homicide investigators participate in car accident training

PELHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Police officers in Pelham and all over the Shelby County are putting their investigation skills to the test.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Alabama is the 6th most dangerous state for car accidents.

There were close to 157,000 crashes in Alabama in 2017.

A crash was reported every three minutes and 20 seconds, according to Drive Safe Alabama’s 2017 report.

Police in the area are going back to class to learn about how to investigate and reconstruct car accidents.

“When you don’t have a whole lot to go on and do have charges and you can’t talk to drivers or witnesses or anything, it’s for us to be able to put the scene back together to figure out what actually happens if there were charges we could put the appropriate charges on people,” said Pelham officer Mark Harnden.

The two-week training program wraps up this week.
