BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — An iconic piece of Birmingham’s theater district is coming down. But not for long! The Alabama theatre sign over Third Avenue North is set to come down today.
The sign is being refurbished with LED bulbs. The move comes just over a year after a replica of the second theater sign on 18th Street was installed. The sign’s refurbishment is part of a long-term plan to restore the historic theater’s exterior.
Glenny Brock of Birmingham Landmarks, explained, “Having launched the endowment, which we are going to fund over the next couple of years with help from the public, it really makes it possible for us to protect and preserve these buildings and have them be beautiful.”
Work on the sign is expected to last up to 18 months. The 1800 block of Third Avenue North will be closed starting at 9 a.m. this morning through Monday.
