The remainder of the Confederate Silent Sam Statue is removed from Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WIAT) — Crews removed a pedestal that once held a confederate statue on the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill campus. At least one person was taken into custody as crews removed the rest of the Silent Sam statue.

UNC Chancellor Carol Folt took the board that oversees the state’s public universities by surprise when she ordered the removal. She also announced she is stepping down from her role at the end of the school year.

The Silent Sam statue was the subject of several protests before students toppled it last year.
