FORESTDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — The suspect in a car robbery is in critical condition after police say he was ejected from the stolen vehicle when he crashed Wednesday night.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Randy Christian, the robbery happened Wednesday evening shortly before 9 p.m. as the owner of a white Chevrolet Trailblazer was sitting inside his vehicle in the parking lot of the Forestdale Taco Bell. The victim reported the suspect approached him, and demanded he exit his car while pointing a gun at him, then hit him in the head with it.

The victim exited, and the suspect got in and drove off, traveling west on Forestdale Blvd.

The vehicle was seen on Highway 87 near Main Street in Graysville by an Adamsville police officer after details of the Trailblazer was broadcast to surrounding officers. When the suspect saw the officer, he sped away, turning off Highway 78 onto Glasgow Hollow Road, where he lost control of the vehicle and crashed. The suspect was ejected and sustained life threatening injuries. There was a passenger in the stolen car who suffered minor injuries.

Christian says the suspect is a 31-year-old man from Graysville. He was taken to the hospital, and remains in critical condition. The passenger was treated at the hospital and released.

Christian says the suspect’s name is withheld, pending formal charges of robbery in the first and attempting to elude. The investigation is ongoing.
