Suspect claims he shot, killed victim for making sexual advances

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the 2700 block of 7th Avenue South after receiving a call about a male lying in the street who had possibly been struck by a car. Moments before police responded to the location, a different unit noticed a vehicle driving down 7th Avenue with the headlights off. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled.

The driver wrecked the vehicle in the 3200 block of Highland Drive. He attempted to flee on foot and was apprehended after a short pursuit.

Investigators determined that the male victim lying on 7th Ave. had not been struck by a car, but had been shot by the suspect who fled in the car.

The suspect was interviewed at Police Headquarters. He alleged that the victim had made sexual advances towards him prior to the shooting. The suspect fled in the victim’s car after the shooting.
