BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Authorities say one man is in custody after a car chase that started in Center Point ended on I-59 in Birmingham.
The suspect is identified as 26-year-old Corey Amous of Birmingham.
According to Chief Deputy Randy Christian, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a blue Ford Crown Victory on Center Point Parkway. The driver reportedly would not stop and a chase ensued south along the parkway.
The suspect got on I-59 at Roebuck Pkwy and traveled south toward Birmingham. A previous accident in the area of 31st Street exit had stopped traffic. Deputies ended the chase because of the traffic.
Christian says the suspect tried to pass traffic on the shoulder, then struck a barricade, disabling the car. He exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Deputies and Birmingham police captured him after a brief foot chase.
Officials recovered a stolen handgun, marijuana and hydrocodone from the suspect’s car.
Amous was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and charged with Reckless Endangerment, Attempting to Elude, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana, Carrying a Pistol Without License, and numerous traffic violations. His bond is set at $59,500.
