Stolen golf cart was more than just a ride at a country club

ADAMSVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — Joy Winchester has devoted the past 26 years of her life to her husband, Dave Winchester. For the last 24 years, Dave has been disabled and confined to a wheelchair. But, a year ago, Joy and the rest of the family had an idea to help Dave live life to the fullest.

A golf cart.

“We got it off of Facebook Marketplace,” explained Joy. “We talked to the people and we were just glad we had it.”

For Dave, the cart makes a difference. It gives him the ability to leave the house and enjoy the outdoors, something he loves to do.

The golf cart is always parked in the driveway right in front of a security camera according to Joy. The surveillance tapes show that the cart was in the driveway last Monday. But, since Saturday morning, it has been missing and the family believes that it has been stolen.

The cameras, per Joy, were knocked out earlier in the week due to severe weather, meaning that they do not have a recording of what happened.

“I was very upset,” said Joy. “I was mad and hurt at the same time.”

“It was a means of mobility for a man that was already handicapped,” added Michelle Winchester, the sister-in-law to Dave and Joy.

Michelle tells CBS 42 that it has been a difficult few years for the couple. Three years ago this November, Dave and Joy lost their son, David, who served in the U.S. Army. Michelle explains that the golf cart is just the latest in a long line of hardship.

“[Dave and Joy] are the most loving and giving people you’ll ever meet,” said Michelle. “They would literally give the shirt off their back if you needed it.”

Joy tells CBS 42 that she has filed a report with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, but all she really wants is for the golf cart to be returned: for Dave’s sake.

“Please bring it back. Bring it back and we won’t press any charges if it was brought (sic.) back to our house where it was left,” said Joy. “I just want it back, that’s all I want.”

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office tells CBS 42 that if you have any information regarding the whereabouts of the golf cart, you’re encouraged to give them a call at 205-325-5700. Photos of the golf cart in question can be found in the above video.
