Some restaurants charge extra to help pay for employees premiums

(WIAT) — Anyone who eats out knows tax and tip can help turn a modest bill into a large expenditure. A new charge is coming at some restaurants: the health insurance surcharge.

“Fat Rice” in Chicago is among a group of restaurants passing the cost of insurance for employees directly to customers.

Starting this week, diners will see four percent automatically added to the bill. That addition  goes to pay half of the health insurance premiums for the restaurant’s workers and increase wages for the kitchen staff.
