SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Three people could be facing federal charges after being arrested in Shelby County. Two men and a woman from Atlanta are being charged with identity theft.
Jermarcus Acholes, Nikkia Huff and Daniel Reed are facing state charges of identity theft. Shelby County Sheriff’s officers spotted mail in the back of their vehicle during a traffic stop.
The state identity theft charges are because the mail contained business checks. If the three benefited from those checks, they could be charged with federal identity theft. This style of theft is pretty common in the Birmingham area.
“There have been identity thieves coming from Atlanta for some time,” said U.S. Postal Inspector Tony Robinson. He tells me those looking to steal mail are putting themselves at risk of being identified.
Robinson told me his office works closely with local law enforcement to catch those who come across state lines to commit identity theft.
“In this particular case, we had a sharp eyed deputy who spotted mail which turned out to be stolen mail in the back of the vehicle,” said Robinson.
The postal inspectors office tells me, when it comes to identity theft, nearly all of it happens online — 97 percent. The three percent who physically steal mail are many times easier to catch thanks to eye-witnesses and surveillance.
