CALERA, Ala. (WIAT) — A man was arrested on robbery charges after he allegedly robbed a convenience store and led authorities on a chase driving south down the northbound side of I-65.

Pelham Police responded to a silent alarm at a convenience store in the 600 block of Cahaba Valley Road on Sunday around 5 a.m. When officers arrived, they observed a woman standing at one of the gas pumps with a man. The woman made eye contact with authorities before pointing at the man and quickly walking away from him.

The suspect, identified as John Sharpe, sped away from the convenience store toward I-65. According to PPD, officers pursued the suspect onto I-65 South to exit 234 in Calera. Police say Sharpe then took the exit and reentered through the I-65 North ramp, driving southbound.

Officers forced Sharpe off the road when they saw oncoming traffic.

Alabaster Police and Calera Police assisted with taking Sharpe into custody.

Police recovered money taken from the register and a knife the suspect possibly used to hold the clerk against her will.

Sharpe is charged with first-degree robbery, attempting to elude law enforcement, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree receiving stolen property.

The suspect is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail.
