GADSDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — We hit the road to check out Noccalula Falls, in Etowah County this week! From the waterfall, petting zoo, train ride, miniature golf course, to camp grounds, there are enough amenities to make a day out of it with you and your family.

The history behind the 250-acre park is a tragic yet beautiful tale. According to local legends, Princess Noccalula’s father arranged a marriage for her, but rather than marrying a man she did not love, she took her own life by falling off the waterfall. This story gave way to the present-day name of the park, Noccalula Falls.

The petting zoo is also home to a lion that is making history at the park. The park supervisor, Janet Tarrance said, “Sheila our lion, queen bee of the park as we like to call her,” has now been a part of Noccalula for nearly 13 years. Sheila is loved so much that the zoo keeper, Cindy Hester said, “I drink my coffee and read the newspaper to her every morning.”

The train will take you to the petting zoo where you can also freely feed the wild animals! “Everybody that rides this train comes back because it’s a memorable experience,” Train Conductor Jimmy Kay said. “The kids they never forget it.”

If your child is three or younger, they will get into the park for free! Adults cost $6, seniors $4 and children ages four to 12 cost $3. If you would like more information on the park before heading to Etowah County, click here.
