Protecting senior citizens from fraud in Center Point

CENTER POINT, Ala. (WIAT) — Many senior citizens are being scammed through technology and it’s costing them millions of dollars.

Now, the city of Center Point wants to put an end to it.

On Tuesday, Mayor Tom Henderson and Councilor Linda Kennemur hosted an informational meeting to address crimes particularly financial crimes that are being committed against senior citizens. The event was open to the public. IRS scams, relative in distress scams, romantic website scams and reverse mortgage scams were addressed.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, FBI, Alabama Securities Commission, Center Point Fire District and the Better Business Bureau participated by presenting information for the elderly.

“They are being very taken advantage of, and we need to educated them so they’re not victims,” Kennemur said.

The event wrapped up at 3:30 p.m. Kennemur and Mayor Henderson plan to coordinate another event in the future.
