Pizza place offers free lunch for government workers affected by shutdown

News

(WIAT) — Wednesday marked the first official day back to work for federal employees since the partial government shutdown.  About 420,000 employees are working without pay while 380,000 others are furloughed

One restaurant in the capitol, a place called &Pizza, is offering federal workers a free lunch as long as the shutdown continues. One of those of &Pizza workers says every little bit helps, especially when a worker does not know when their next paycheck is coming.

Lateashea Lofties, a federal employee, said,”I was supposed to be on leave this week, to spend time with my family, my husband and my son, but I got a phone call from my supervisor saying government is shutdown and you know, you’re going to be furloughed so you don’t get the opportunity to use your leave.”

Federal workers say they are thankful to the restaurant and its owner, and that they hope the shutdown ends soon so they can return to work.
