BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The city of Birmingham held the first “Peace in the Park” since an officer-involved shooting shook the community Wednesday night.
The city hosts these events as part of an effort to combat crime in the city.
Mayor Randall Woodfin’s office released a statement reading in part:
“Studies have shown that crime tends to increase during summer months, particularly among young adults. The goal of this initiative is to have Birmingham police officers, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel and community partners engage with the public in a fun and free atmosphere.”
The events will feature a variety of activities including rides, games, face painting, a hip-hop fitness class, and music.
Only two events left this summer. Peace in the Park schedule with each event taking place from 6 P.M. to 9 P.M.:
Friday, August 2 at Legion Field
Friday, August 9 at McAlpine Park Rec Center
