MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — The  $2.1 billion general fund budget has passed its first big hurdle in the Alabama legislature. The budget gives state employees a two percent cost of living raise and fully funds the Medicaid program.

The budget also includes the governor’s  $40 million for the Alabama Department of Corrections to hire 500 more officers.

The budget now heads to the Senate for debate.
