New sculpture installed at downtown Birmingham Federal Reserve building

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A sculpture is symbolizing new life returning to a historic building in downtown Birmingham.

A 16-foot sculpture named the ‘spire’ was installed at the Federal Reserve building on 5th Avenue in the city’s central business district (CBD). The historic building is undergoing renovations to transform it into office and retail space.

Capstone Real Estate and Harbert Realty are teaming up to restore the building to its former glory. Capstone chairman Michael Mouron says they were able to find the original plans for the building and replicate it using materials in its original style.

“I’ve never seen so much positive momentum downtown so it’s fun to be a part of it,” Mouron said. “It’s fun to join with Harbert and bring this building back to life and make it once again a contributing structure to the Birmingham CBD.”

Once the Federal Reserve building reopens in 2017, it will be used as office and retail space.
