EUTAW, Ala. (WIAT) — We are learning more information about a fatal shooting that happened Saturday afternoon at the Greenetrack Casino. Greene County District Attorney Greg Griggers said the suspect, Antoine Robinson, walked inside the lobby of the casino then assaulted a security guard, taking his gun and assaulting him with the weapon.
“I don’t know what was on this young man’s mind when he did this, this seems to be a very random act. And there is no reason for anyone to be concerned or worried about going to the Greenetrack, to think something like this would happen again. It is rare that there are any problems like this at the track,” Griggers said.
The District Attorney said the entire incident was caught on video surveillance cameras. Booker Vester is the security guard who was injured. He is a former Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy. After the suspect attacked Vester and took his gun, he tried to shoot Vester.
“You can see this individual pull or attempt to pull the trigger. I know he fired one round into the ground next to Mr. Vester after he beat him, so he is very lucky,” Griggers said.
Some residents like Matt Waits are on edge because of what happened.
“It is scary because your vulnerable no matter where you are. And something like that can happen and a person can hurt you and if someone is irrational, this can happen anywhere at any time. I try to be mindful of what’s going on, but I would never think that would happen. It is the last thing in your mind,” Wait said.
Robinson later ran outside and attempted to carjack a couple in the parking lot. In the process, Robinson fired several shots at their car. The driver had a gun and fired back and was wounded, but only suffered minor injuries. Greg Griggers said Robinson ran away and then accidentally shot himself.
“It appears that in the haste of getting away that he shot himself,” said Griggers. “I know he died of a gunshot wound to the head, and from all appearances it was self- inflicted.”
Security Guard Booker Vester is still in the hospital being treated for head injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery.
