CHICAGO, IL. (CBS) Violence did not take a vacation in Chicago this Fourth of July Holiday weekend.
During a morning press conference, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said there were at least 42 shooting incidents from Wednesday night to early Monday morning. Six people were murdered.
More than 15 hundred police officers worked extra hours in an effort to stem the violence that seems to repeat every July Fourth in the city.
Officers arrested 84 people on gun-related charges which Johnson called a “ridiculous amount.” Police say they recovered 199 guns from July 3rd through July 7th. He also says that equates to nearly two illegal guns per hour that were taken off the streets this weekend by the Chicago Police Department.
Johnson said he believes stronger punishment could help lower gun violations.
