WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Authorities are investigating after two people were found dead under the I-22 overpass in Walker County off exit 78 inside a pickup truck.

Sunday, the Walker County Coroner identified victims as John Softley and Monica Cooper.

Softley was a Parrish town councilor.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Lt. Jon Riley tells CBS 42 Walker County 911 received a call earlier Saturday from an off-duty fire fighter who found the two deceased in a truck under the bridge.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office responded and requested the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) take over the investigation.

The Walker County Coroner’s Office says it appears the cause of death was gunshot wounds.

Riley told CBS 42 Saturday evening the two knew each other, though they are not sure at this time what the nature of their relationship was. Riley says they do not believe there is any outstanding threat to the community.

Parrish Mayor Heather Halls says the news is devastating.

“My heart is broken for the families involved and if there is anything we can do to help during this time of stress and mourning we are here for them,” Hall said.

This is a developing story. CBS 42 will update as more information becomes available.
