Man shot to death in Norwood after ‘drinking and gambling’ ended in altercation

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place at 15th Court North and 33rd Street North on May 1, according to Birmingham Police.

The victim was a man that was shot on a porch several times, according to Sgt. Shelton.

Tuesday morning, the coroner identified the victim as 34-year-old Joseph Darnell Smith of Birmingham. Birmingham police Tuesday said the preliminary investigation revealed Smith and others were at the home “gambling and drinking” when an altercation began. Smith was shot during the altercation.

“We’ve had this happen before within similar circumstances, but the reality is it only takes one disagreement for violence to happen. We have to resolve our issues without violence and understand a disagreement should not equal death,” Sgt. Bryan Shelton said.

On Monday, May 8, Birmingham police announced a suspect was arrested and charged with murder. Janorris John is charged with Smith’s murder. His bond is set at $60,000
