JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE 4:22 p.m.: One of the men injured in yesterday’s fire at the Carl Cannon dealership in Jasper, Ala. has died, according to the Walker County coroner.
Jake Jennings was pronounced dead at 1:45 p.m.
ORIGINAL: Five people have been taken to hospitals after an explosion at a Jasper car dealership, according to Jasper Police.
An employee at Carl Cannon tells CBS42 that an oil bin exploded in the service department, burning five individuals. According to Jasper Police, the explosion occurred around 5:20 p.m., and Jasper Police, Jasper Fire, Alabama State Fire Marshal and Walker County EMA responded to the scene.
Mayor David O’Mary described the employees at Carl Cannon as a family.
“This dealership, these folks, have been my friends for a long, long time,” O’Mary said. “This is a big family here at Carl Cannon. I just talked to the general manager and chief financial officer, I’ve known him for years, and he’s carrying a heavy burden right now.”
Four of the victims were transported to UAB in critical condition, and one was taken to Walker Baptist Medical Center. The person taken to Walker Baptist Medical Center’s condition is unclear at this time.
O’Mary says he went down to the scene to show support for the injured employees and calls on the rest of the city to pray for everyone involved.
“I call on this community to lift up a prayer for those that were injured, lift up a prayer for the attending physicians, that they might apply their skills to the best of their abilities, and lift up a prayer for the families as they work through this very trying time of uncertainty about their loved ones,” O’Mary said.
The dealership was closed for the remainder of yesterday. It is still unclear when it will open back up.
