GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids man was arrested for allegedly urinating on a 5-year-old girl and using racial slurs toward her, police say.
The Grand Rapids Police Department said the incident happened late Wednesday afternoon in an alley off the 1000 block of Leonard Street NW, near Tamarack Avenue. They said they got a call about it about 20 minutes after it happened.
GRPD officers processed the alley for evidence and interviewed the girl, who is black, and her parents. Officers also found three witnesses, ages 5 and 7.
The victim and witnesses said the man urinated on the girl and then called her the N-word.
After getting a description of the man, officer canvassed the neighborhood and identified a suspect. He wasn’t at his home when they went there, but a neighbor called the police to tell them when he returned.
The suspect, a white man around the age of 60, was arrested without incident and jailed. GRPD said he faced a felony charge, though a late Wednesday release did not list that charge. More details should be available Thursday.
GRPD’s Family Services detective is handling the case. Police said the girl and witnesses will be offered counseling services through the Children’s Advocacy Center.
