BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Later this month, the Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will launch a special event. The World’s Largest Truck Convoy is coming to Alabama for the very first time!
The national fundraiser has been successful for other torch run programs across the United States. The one-day celebration of the trucking industry, it’s partners, and law enforcement raises money for the Special Olympics. Any truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 10,000 lbs or larger will be escorted by law enforcement from Birmingham to Gadsden. Once they reach their final stop in Gadsden, truckers will be greeted by Special Olympics athletes and fans.
Registration starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday, September 29th. The trip on I-459 starts around 10 a.m. Truckers will leave from Guiding Light Church on John Rogers Drive in Birmingham. The event wraps up when they stop in at the Petro Truck Stop on Highway 77 in Gadsden. Lunch, music, an awards ceremony and more will be waiting for them as they arrive.
There are several ways you can take part. Truckers can buy a ticket for the convoy, a short haul partnership, as well as other levels of partnership. More information and to purchase your ticket, click here. You can also keep up with the countdown to the event on Facebook.
