What to do in Birmingham this weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — With Memorial Day fast approaching, Birmingham is pumping up summer themed activities. There are plenty of fun events happening this weekend! The moderator of the Magic City, Antwon Ervin of Discover Birmingham, is here to sort out all the great happenings happening around town!Let’s shoot at the Avon- Spring Scramble 5K: May 16

On Saturday, May 16, money raised at the ninth-annual Spring Scramble 5K will benefit the Children’s Center for Weight Management (CCWM) to support the Healthy Active Living Initiative sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics.  Hosted by the UAB pediatric residents, the race is also being held to educate and inspire healthy lifestyle choices for all our communities’ youngsters.

The 5K begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the 1-mile Fun Run at 6:30 p.m. at Brookwood Village, (780 Brookwood Village, Birmingham)  outside the Belk department store entrance, and will continue down Lakeshore Trail in Homewood. Complimentary Parking is available at Brookwood Village. This year’s event will also include prizes, live music and food trucks.

Individual awards will be given for the 5k format only. Awards will be given for the 1st and 2nd place male and female in each age group. Awards will also be given to the overall male and female top finishers (1st, 2nd and 3rd place). Runners must be present to collect their prizes.

Registration is $20 for all UAB or Children’s employees. General public prices are $25 per individual. All students under 12 years old race for free. The registration fee includes a T-shirt and goodie bag. Preregistration is required and can be made at by visiting http://www.springscramble.org.Do Dah Day: May 16, 2015: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Caldwell Park–26th Street South and Highland Avenue

Do Dah Day grew out of an idea in 1979 and has raised almost $1.5 million since! The South’s craziest parade kicks off at 11:01 a.m. on the streets of Highland Avenue in Birmingham’s Southside. Then, spend the day in Caldwell and Rhodes Parks with friends, pets, arts & crafts, kid’s activities, and a lineup of great bands. Oh yes, we have plenty of food and beverages, and collectible Do Dah Day t-shirts.

All proceeds benefit local animal charities.
